Joshua West IV

Joshua “Jack” Cottingham West IV passed away in his home Wednesday, May 2, 2018. He was born June 4, 1942, in Suffolk, and was a lifelong resident of his beloved town. He was predeceased by his parents, Joshua C. West III and Frances H. West, sister, Sherwood Sackett, and grandson, Mason Joshua West.

He was a proud Marine and served five years in the Reserves. He exemplified the courage of a warrior in his 33-year battle with multiple sclerosis. He graduated from Old Dominion University and was a KA Fraternity member. Jack retired from Merrill Lynch, founded Hampton Roads Financial LLC with his son, and worked there until his passing.

Jack was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Suffolk and served on the Vestry several times. He was very active in his community, serving in the Jaycees, coaching at SYAA and being a board member of Tidewater Occupational Therapy and the ODU Athletic Board. He was also a third-generation Rotarian with the Suffolk Rotary Club.

He is survived and adored by his wife and best friend of more than 50 years, Barbara L. West; daughter, Tara W. Allen (Kerry); son, Joshua C. West V (Katie); two grandchildren, Sarah and Cooper; his loving sister, Ginger W. Owen (Bill); mother-in-law, Ethel Lewis; and a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the many friends and organizations that have supported him with visits and assisted Barbara and his children.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2018, in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 213 N. Main St., Suffolk. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2018, in R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk. Burial will be private in Cedar Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Suffolk Humane Society or the National MS Society.
