The Lakeland High School baseball team took a close 5-4 loss to Great Bridge High School.
The Cavaliers had a late lead on Great Bridge but were unable to prevent a comeback. Lakeland got on the board first in the third inning, immediately going up 2-0. They built on that lead in the fifth inning, going up 4-1 with Great Bridge scoring two runs in that same inning. However, three runs by Great Bridge went unanswered in the sixth inning, which gave them the win.
Tyler Spencer handled pitching duties for Lakeland and was credited with the loss. Lakeland scored four runs off of six hits, with Andrew Kelley and Demonta Hawkins leading the way with two hits apiece. Kelley went 2-4 with three RBIs, while Hawkins went 2-4 with a run.
Lakeland will face rival Nansemond River High School at home at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
