Katelyn Biando recently was selected second team All-ODAC for the Virginia Wesleyan University softball team.
The former Nansemond River High School standout is a freshman for the Virginia Wesleyan University softball team, which is in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
She has stepped in and stood out for a VWU team that won the NCAA Division III National Championship last season. For many, it could be tough coming in and not only adjusting to the college level of play but also making sure you are living up to the standards of such a well-regarded program.
VWU is currently in the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament as a No. 1 seed and has a record of 46-2.
She has 36 hits and 25 RBIs on the season. She has only struck out twice the whole season to this point. During the regular season, she registered a hit in 21 of the team’s last 30 games in the clean-up hitter role. She was a big part of the team’s ODAC championship.
Biando said she just wanted to come in and help any way she could.
“It was really cool to make All-Conference considering I am only a freshman,” Biando said. “But to be completely honest, I was a lot more excited that the team won both the regular season and the ODAC tournament.”
The VWU freshman didn’t know she was going to make All-Conference, even though she felt she played well enough this season. On the other hand, she felt like she could have played better and is always looking for things to improve on. If her freshman season is any indication of what’s to come, her future looks bright at VWU.
VWU recently defeated Gettysburg College in the NCAA regional tournament and is waiting to advance.
During her time at Nansemond River, Biando was an All-Conference, All-Region and an All-State player. She was part of helping the Lady Warriors softball team reach the Class 5 state semifinal game last year.
