Suffolk’s Relay for Life Event Lead Dana DeFreeuw announced on Facebook Live Wednesday morning that the event has been postponed until further notice.

They are working with Nansemond River High School on a rain date for the event.

According to DeFreeuw, the weather for Friday would not let the event be a success.

“As of today, the weather does not look good. At the beginning of the year, we came up with a word that we wanted our Relay to be. That was ‘success,’” DeFreeuw said. “If we went ahead with Relay on Friday, that would not be plausible for the event.”

Since Monday, DeFreeuw and her team have been in constant contact with the city of Suffolk to keep an eye on the weather.

In years past, Relay was a rain or shine event, but the event was canceled with the safety of others in mind.

“We don’t want everyone stuck where they could be in harm’s way,” DeFreeuw said. “The decision was not made lightly, and it breaks my heart.”
