A juvenile male at John Yeates Middle School will be disciplined after being found with a 5-inch box cutter on May 22.
“A student advised school administration that a fellow student at John Yeates Middle School was in possession of a weapon on school property,” city spokeswoman Diana Klink said in an email. “No students were threatened or injured during the incident.”
Another student reported the juvenile had a box cutter in the boys’ bathroom, according to the letter Principal Dr. Wendy VanHosen sent to parents.
The weapon was confiscated from the student, and the school notified the resource officer and began an investigation.
“Appropriate disciplinary actions have been taken in accordance with Suffolk Public Schools’ Code of Conduct,” VanHosen stated in the letter.
According to the Code of Conduct, having a box cutter is a level three or level four incident and can result in temporary suspension lasting no longer than nine days or long-term removal of the student from school.
The letter did not specify the route Suffolk Public Schools took to handle the situation.
