A 1-0 loss to Maury High School in the Class 5 Region A first round ended the Lady Warriors’ season.

Nansemond River High School and Maury matched up for the second time this season Wednesday night for the regional first round. For the second time, Maury was able to defeat the Lady Warriors. Both teams battled during the whole evening at Todd Stadium.

In the first half, both teams went back and forth. Maury had few opportunities to get on the board in the first half. The Lady Warriors’ defense was stout, and goalie Faith Bibbo was able to keep Maury scoreless. Their shots were consistent. At the 31-minute mark of the game, senior Indiah Hunter attempted a shot that hit the right goal post.

In the second half, neither team got much of anything going. Maury was able to get a shot attempt at the 71-minute mark, but a save by Bibbo kept the game at zero. It was clear at that point that the game would head into extra time. A Maury goal ended the game at the 89-minute mark.

Nansemond River came into the evening as the No. 5 seed in the region, while Maury was the No. 4 seed. Coach Jonathan Baca said the Maury coach congratulated him on the way the Lady Warriors play.

“He said we are a very good, competitive team and that we always give them a good fight,” Baca said.

Looking back on the season, Baca felt like it was a successful one for the Lady Warriors. It was his second season with the team after taking over last year.

“I enjoy soccer. It is my passion, and I enjoyed being around these girls,” Baca said. “They played hard all season. I am so proud of them.”

Nansemond River had five seniors, and the likes of Hunter and Kayleigh McQueen will go on to play soccer at the next level.

“I am proud of these seniors,” Baca said. “They all played well, and two will be going on to college. Indiah and Kayleigh were very committed to the sport and will do well in college.”

Nansemond River still remains a young team and will have a solid core coming back for next season
