Isle of Wight Academy softball knocked off Greenbrier Christian Academy for the VISAA state championship Tuesday.
IWA completed one of its most memorable postseason runs with the 4-3 defeat of GCA to earn the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II championship. What made the feat so impressive is that GCA had a nine-year streak of winning the state championship, but IWA was able to deny them their 10th.
At Stoney Run Athletic Complex Tuesday, IWA took a 2-1 lead after the first inning. They scored their final two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and were able to hold off a GCA comeback. Madison Rountree had a big game going 2-4 with one run, three RBIs, a double and a home run. Kaylin Manner went 3-3 with a run and RBI.
During its tournament run, IWA defeated both Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and GCA. Both of those schools were the top two seeds respectively. NSA had even defeated IWA in the two meetings prior to their semifinal matchup. However, IWA took the third to advance to the state championship. They finished the season with an 18-4 record.
