Dr. Winston Melville Browne Jr.’s life of love and service ended when his Lord and Savior called him home on May 28, 2018. A true Southern gentleman, Winston was born in Bloxom on April 10, 1930, to Winston Melville Browne Sr. (Coach) and Alma Watkinson Browne. When he was a young boy, his parents moved to Franklin, where he graduated from Franklin High School after enjoying an outstanding high school athletics career. Winston continued his education at the University of Richmond’s Richmond College where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Carpenter Browne. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, Winston attended the Medical College of Virginia and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Winston then fulfilled his commitment to his country by serving as a captain in the U.S. Air Force as a dentist.

Upon his discharge, Winston and Beth married in 1958 and moved to Boykins to establish a home, family and dental practice. They raised Win and Bo Browne, both of whom were so inspired by their father’s life that they followed in his footsteps by attending the University of Richmond and the Medical College of Virginia.

Winston devoted himself to the care of his patients and service to his community for more than 40 years. He was an active member of Boykins Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, life deacon and church trustee, all the while dedicating himself to teaching the Berean Men’s Sunday School Class. Winston was also active in the Boykins Lion’s Club.

One of Dr. Browne’s lasting achievements was being a founder of Southampton Academy, which was established in 1969 and continues to provide a quality education for the youth of this area and abroad.

Winston loved his friends and was an avid golfer and bird hunter, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He was a devoted son to his parents and a warm and generous father-in-law to his beloved daughters-in-law, Amy and Jodi. The greatest joys of his later life were his three grandsons, Bowman Reed Browne Jr., Michael Cole Browne and Winston Melville Browne IV.

His loss will be felt forever by those left behind. His life, however, will continue to inspire his family and all others who benefited from his generous service. Winston was predeceased in death by his parents; his brother, Beverly Watkinson Browne; his sister, Alma Browne O’Hara; and his beloved wife, Beth.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank all of those who lovingly cared for Winston in his time of need.

Funeral arrangements are being provided by Wright Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Boykins Baptist Church followed by a graveside service at Beachwood Cemetery in Boykins. Following the graveside service, all are invited to return to the church for a time of fellowship and remembrance. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Boykins Baptist Church or Southampton Academy. www.wrightfuneralhome.org
