Support Meals on Wheels

If you love good old-fashioned fun and also like to support your neighbors in need, you’ll want to be at King’s Fork Middle School at 7 p.m. this Friday with $15 in your hand.
Suffolk Meals on Wheels will bring the eighth annual Rocky Hock Opry benefit show to the school’s auditorium, and it will be filled with hilarious comedy routines and hits from days gone by in the Motown, country, “golden oldies” and gospel genres.
It’s a hilarious and enjoyable show, but more importantly it supports the local Meals on Wheels organization, which helps people who might be your family, friends or neighbors, or perhaps you one day.
Contrary to popular belief, Meals on Wheels isn’t only for elderly or indigent people. It’s for anyone who is unable to prepare his or her own meals, even if it’s only temporary, and it can start on an emergency basis after a person’s release from the hospital or rehabilitation facility. The service delivers two meals and two beverages every weekday, providing two-thirds of the nutrition requirements per day.
Unlike some Meals on Wheels organizations in America, Suffolk Meals on Wheels receives no government support. Recipient fees — a small $7.50 per day — as well as grants and donations are the only funding sources.
“We are fueled by volunteer passion and grit,” Executive Director Roseland Worrell told a News-Herald reporter earlier this week.
Suffolk Meals on Wheels makes a real difference in the lives of about 150 of your neighbors every single weekday. It’s more than just food delivery; volunteers arrive with generous helpings of friendly smiles, caring and compassion to go along with the life-sustaining nutrition.
We encourage everyone to support Meals on Wheels, and there’s no better time to do so than when the Rocky Hock Opry rolls around. It’s great to get a side of entertainment with your entrée of helping support a critically important community organization.
