Police say chicken parts were spilled from a tractor-trailer as a result of an accident on U.S. Route 58 Thursday morning, causing a traffic delay while clean-up efforts were under way.

The incident was reported at 9:26 a.m. A passenger vehicle reportedly left the roadway after another vehicle caused it to run off the road.

An open-top tractor-trailer carrying chicken parts braked abruptly to avoid the accident, which caused part of its load to spill. The tractor-trailer did not stop at the scene.

The woman driving the passenger vehicle suffered minor injuries and was treated by Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel.

Due to the nature of the debris on the roadway, the city treated it as a hazardous materials incident. Periodic road closures and alternating traffic were required due to the clean-up efforts.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue used a tanker truck to wash down the roadway, and crews from Suffolk Public Works put down sand in the area.
