Barbara Joan Whitehurst Allen, 85, of Hazelton Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2018, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk.

Mrs. Allen was born at her parents’ home in Gates County on May 6, 1933, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Bonnie and Margaret Howell Whitehurst. Retired after many years with Lipton Tea Company, she was a member of Savage’s United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Garry B. Allen; and her sisters, Jakie Noll and Rachel Savage.

Surviving are her sister, Muriel Twine, of Belvidere; two sons, Joseph Allen and wife, Barbara, of Gates, and Michael Allen and wife, Kim, of Gloucester; three grandchildren, Joni Decosimo and husband, Jason, of Gates, David Allen and wife, Lindsey, of Williamsburg, and Noah Allen and wife, Ashley, of Prince George; and six great-grandchildren, Caleb and Brayden Decosimo, and Aubrey, Savanna, Roman and Dylan Allen.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Savage’s United Methodist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Casey Estler, and longtime family friend, Greg Casper.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, or in the church social hall immediately after the service on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Perpetual Care Fund of Savage’s U.M.C., in care of Mallory Buck, 210 Mallory Buck Road, Gates, NC  27937.
