The Lakeland High School softball team had two players make the Class 3 Region A teams.

Lisa Stuprich and Tessa Johnson were both selected second team All-Region for the Lady Cavs. Lakeland enjoyed a strong season, advancing all the way to the second round of the region tournament.

They had their biggest win of the season in the first round against Booker T. Washington High School, winning 26-4. Johnson pitched six innings that game and struck out nine. At the plate, she had three hits and scored three runs. Throughout her four years of playing softball, she was finally able to achieve one of her goals — to make an All-Region team.

“It is a great feeling for me to be able to represent Lakeland softball,” Johnson said. “All my hard work throughout my four years has paid off. I am thankful for the entire Lakeland softball program and to have had such great teammates by my side. To finally achieve this is an awesome feeling.”

There were usual ups and downs through Lakeland’s season, but overall, they felt good about what they were able to accomplish.

Stuprich was also excited to have been chosen on the All-Region team.

“I was surprised when I first heard, but I am thankful to have been able to make the team,” Stuprich said. “I didn’t expect it. I love softball, and I know my family is proud of me and I am very proud of myself as well.”

Sara Matthews and Alex Kinsey made honorable mention for Lakeland.

There were some great moments for Lakeland throughout the year with the consensus being the team’s win over Great Bridge High School. Lakeland had been the clear underdogs for that game, and they were able to come out on top. That game, Stuprich went 3-4 with two runs, and Johnson went 2-3 with a run and an RBI.

“That will be a game I will never forget,” Johnson said. “That was the first time Lakeland softball had beaten them. We all played our hearts out.”
