Hazel Lavern Alexander Powers

Hazel Lavern Alexander Powers died Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was 75 years old.

She was a native of Suffolk and a resident of Prodigy Transitional Rehab in Tarboro, N.C., for a number of years.

Hazel was born May 15, 1943, as the youngest child of the late Jessie James Alexander Sr. and Annie Mae James Alexander. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 34 years, Prince Albert Powers Sr.; sisters: Dorothy Rawls, Mae Pearl Copeland; and brothers, John L. Alexander and Jessie J. Alexander Jr.; and stepson, Prince A. Powers Jr.

Hazel worked many years as processor at the General Electric in Portsmouth. She graduated from Suffolk City Schools and enjoyed reading, spelling and playing basketball. She was very energetic, had a good sense of humor and loved to have a good time.

She is survived by her brother, William R. Alexander, of Portsmouth; daughters, Princess Powers McDonald, of Suffolk, Angela Powers Mallory (Kevin), of Halifax, N.C., stepdaughter, Rose Goins, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; grandson, Javaze L. McDonald (Geanna), and a great-granddaughter, Nashara, of Iwakuni, Japan; a special granddaughter whom she helped raise, Stephanie Lassiter (Mack) of Suffolk; many step-grandchildren; nieces, Lorraine Brooks (Anthony), of Yorktown, Jacquelyn Whitener, of Lawton, Okla., Pamela Blyden (Hubert), of Buffalo, N.Y.; nephews, Isaac Rawls, of Brooklyn, N.Y., James E. Powers (Betty), of Jacksonville, Fla., William Larry Pelham (Lavette), of Franklin, Rodney Copeland (Renea), of Lawton, Okla., Curtis L. Joyner (Kimatha), Robert D. Joyner and John Lee Jr., of Suffolk; many grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Prodigy Transitional Rehab of Tarboro for their attentive and professional care of our loved one over the many years of her residency. Also, we thank everyone for all their concerns, calls, visits, thoughts and prayers.

Visitation for Mrs. Powers will be held from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday June 20, 2018, with her funeral service immediately following the visitation. The location of visitation and service will be in the Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Her interment will take place promptly after the funeral service at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, N.C.
