To the editor:

Last week’s Summer TideWATER Camp of the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society and Suffolk Art League came to fruition thanks to a generous donation from the Birdsong Trust Fund.

Fifteen terrific young students, from diverse backgrounds, were entertained and educated throughout the week. The campers’ reactions to the various adventures were some of the most rewarding of my teaching career.

Adventures included an extensive scavenger hunt, touring and swimming at Chippokes Plantation State Park, canoeing the Nansemond River with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and a day visit to the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, led by Suffolk Tourism.

The time and resources made available, through this combined community endeavor, were both

appreciated and overwhelming. I want to sincerely thank the following people and organizations who contributed in making this a highly successful summer camp:

4Linda Bunch, Suffolk Art League

4LaMarr Coles III, Unit Director, Suffolk Boys & Girls Club

4Kevin Sary, Suffolk Tourism

4Penny Lazauskas, “Nature’s Calling,” Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

4Paige Sanford and Taylor McConnell, Chesapeake Bay Foundation

4Mrs. Martin, Chippokes Plantation State Park

I look forward to serving the students of this community in this capacity for many years to come.
