The Suffolk Foundation recently announced the winners of the Ossie S. and Thomas F. Blair Jr. Memorial Scholarships and the Howard D. Mast Memorial Scholarship.

There are two winners of the $5,000 Blair scholarship this year: seniors Malachi Middleton of Nansemond River High School and Madellyn Carr of Lakeland High School.

This is the first time for the Blair scholarship, administered and maintained by the Suffolk Foundation, to make two awards.

The Blair Scholarship Award Committee received and reviewed 20 applications and narrowed the finalists before agreeing that both Carr and Middleton were deserving.

The Suffolk Foundation also announced the winner of the $5,000 Howard D. Mast Memorial Scholarship, which also went to Madellyn Carr.

This is the 10th anniversary of the Mast scholarship and 12th scholarship given, as two each were given in 2016 and 2017.

The Mast Scholarship Award Committee received and reviewed 20 applications, 17 of whom also applied for the Blair scholarship. Finalists were narrowed to three and interviewed in person before Carr was chosen.
