Get involved this Saturday

The Suffolk Public Library will engage members of the community this Saturday with plenty of volunteer opportunities for community service hours at Engage Suffolk Day of Service.

This free and public event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the North Suffolk Library, 2000 Bennetts Creek Park Road. Outdoor activities at the library will be moved indoors in the event of rain this Saturday.

The library will partner with Hund’s ReCycle Factory in Norfolk with an all-day bike building station that will benefit local children, according to Library Services Coordinator Angela Martin. Volunteers will work on these project bikes and get them back up to speed under the guidance of ReCycle Factory staff.

Wayne Jones of Suffolk Litter Control and Keep Suffolk Beautiful will lead a community litter cleanup at Bennett’s Creek Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers should be prepared to get dirty and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the cleanup.

There will also be an Upcycle art project beside the bike build station using recycled bottle caps. Martin said it’s going to be similar to the mosaic that was made in partnership between Suffolk Beautiful, the Suffolk Art League, the Suffolk Art Gallery and Suffolk Public Schools back in January to raise awareness about pollution and promote recycling.

“We’re going to make a great art piece of the Great Dismal Swamp,” she said, including a scene on Lake Drummond with the water and trees.
