Lowe earns first hit in majors

Suffolk native Brandon Lowe finally snapped his major-league hitless streak Wednesday night.

In a Tampa Bay Rays win over the New York Yankees, Lowe had two hits with two RBIs. It was a weight that was lifted off the Suffolk native’s shoulder after going 0-19 in his first few MLB games.

“Finally, I can move past that huge obstacle of the first hit,” Lowe said to the Rays media after the Yankees game. “I can finally relax and settle in.”

The New York Yankees is a historic baseball team and one of the most heavily viewed professional sports teams. The Yankees were in the 2017 World Series last season and are among one of the top teams in the MLB this season as well.

All that adds to the impression Lowe must have made by getting his first hit against a team of that caliber.

After being called up from the Durham Bulls two weeks ago, Lowe has started in all but one game for the Rays thus far. Even though his hitting wasn’t where he wanted it to be, he was still able to make plays in the outfield and infield for the Rays.

The initial moment of being called up was one to remember for Lowe. At the end of the day, whether in the majors or minors, he is still playing baseball, which is something he has done since he was young.

“I was in shock and disbelief,” he said. “It was a lifelong dream come true, and it was an incredible moment. Nothing has changed, though; it is the same game that I have been playing. I need to stick to what has been working.”

The Rays are still in the playoff race for a Wild Card spot, but they will need to make up a significant amount of ground in front of them. They are currently third place in the American League East.
