William Mitchell Hayes

William Mitchell Hayes, 87, passed away on Aug. 25, 2018. He was the son of Margaret and William F. Hayes and was born and raised in Manhattan, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Anne Marie Hayes, and his sister, Maureen Reinhard. The majority of his married life was spent raising his family in McLean.
William was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served two tours of duty during the Korean Conflict as an intelligence officer. He remained in active reserve for 17 years until he resigned his captain’s commission. In civilian life, he became a special agent with the Office of Naval Intelligence. In 1961, he joined Haloid Xerox, where he worked for 26 years and retired in 1987. He later moved to Suffolk.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church in Suffolk, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Korean War Veterans, The American Legion, The Knights of Columbus, The First Marine Division Association, The Disabled American Veterans, and The DAV Auxillary Unit 17. William is an alumnus of Fordham University.
William is survived by his sons, William J. Hayes, of Richmond, and Michael Hayes and wife, Dawn, of Sterling; daughter, Jacqueline Mignella and husband, Robert, of Bridgewater, N.J.; brother, Robert Edward Hayes, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew Mignella and Megan and Christina Hayes; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, at St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church, 202 N. Broad St., Suffolk, by Father Emmanuel Mensah. Burial will follow at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery with military honors. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
