Ahead of Labor Day weekend plans to add hundreds of miles to vehicle odometers, motorists across the country are seeing prices drop at their local gas pumps, according to AAA Tidewater.

Virginia’s gas prices have been steady at $2.60 per gallon, a 45-cent increase compared to last year, according to the Monday press release. Hampton Roads reflects the state average, which is a 49-cent difference from last year as well.

For contrast, the Suffolk News-Herald reported that the average price per gallon in Hampton Roads on Aug. 13 was $2.62.

Virginia’s prices are much cheaper than the national average at $2.84 per gallon. That’s two cents cheaper than a month ago, but still 48 cents more expensive than a year ago, according to the press release.

The forecast for pump prices this holiday weekend has only temporary concerns for upticks.

“With Labor Day approaching, Virginians could see a slight increase in gas prices, but any jump should not last past the holiday weekend,” Georjeane Blumling, vice president of public affairs for AAA Tidewater Virginia, stated in the press release.

Gasbuddy.com on Tuesday recorded regular gas prices at Suffolk pumps that ranged from as low as $2.48 to as high as $2.69 per gallon, a slight change compared to the $2.54-$2.69 range recorded on Aug. 14.

The average price per gallon in Suffolk has not eclipsed $2.70 since June 11, according to AAA.
