That Good BBQ closes

The owners of popular downtown restaurant That Good BBQ announced on the business’s Facebook page Sunday morning that the restaurant will be closed effective immediately.

“As most know, Rhonda and I are moving to Oklahoma,” owner Barry Day posted. “The plan was to have our son continue to run That Good BBQ. Unfortunately — due to an unforeseen and unfortunate turn of events that plan is no longer possible. Therefore, effective immediately That Good BBQ is closed permanently.”

The restaurant announced on July 18 that they were passing on the reins to their son, Korey, while they made the move to Oklahoma, but those plans have not worked out in their favor.

“We had aspirations of my son working for me running and keeping it open, because we didn’t want to cut Suffolk out. Some things happened that won’t make that possible,” Day said during a phone interview, while declining to elaborate.

Day is happy to be going back to Oklahoma because his family is there, and he wants to spend time with his dad as he ages. But while he is happy to be moving, he will miss the relationships he has formed with customers at the restaurant.

“The people were awesome, and the people were so friendly. They were open to us, and we loved to watch them smile as they were eating,” Day said. “We enjoyed the people and the community.”

A lot of Day’s memories from the restaurant are the long days. For the first two years, Day remembers working 23-hour days to make sure the restaurant was running.

“In the last year, we were able to make a few modifications to make it a little less time restricting,” Day said. “But just the all-around effort that our employees put into the stuff here, and they were so proud of this place.”

Day is sad to see the restaurant close, and he wants to make it known that they are heartbroken because of it.

“This is heartbreaking for us, and this is heartbreaking that it didn’t pan out,” Day said.
