The Lakeland High School boys’ volleyball team hopes team growth comes together soon.
Last year was a season to remember for the Cavs boys’ volleyball team. They had their most successful season to date when they advanced to the regional tournament for the first time in school history. From there, they ended up in the regional championship and earned their first berth to the state tournament.
What was so impressive about the Cavs’ run last season is that they had to play against all Class 4 schools in their postseason run.
A lot of seniors have graduated, which has left Lakeland with a relatively fresh team this season. They also have a new coach in Jackelyn Wood, who has seen improvements in the team so far but still knows there is work to be done.
Lakeland has a small team, but Wood likes the enthusiasm the team has shown far this season.
“All the guys really enjoy playing, and I really enjoy coaching them,” Wood said. “The guys are eager to learn, and that’s the sign of a team that wants to get better.”
When talking to the team about goals for this season, Wood came up with a couple of things. She wants her players to have fun and enjoy the game but also wants her players to find one thing to improve each time they step on the court, whether that be for a game or practice. At some point at the end of the season, they will look back on how they have improved over the year.
Tyler Spencer returns for the Cavs after being a part of the playoff team in 2017 as a sophomore. Spencer is the captain for this season as his knowledge of the game is beneficial for the rest of his teammates. Austin Bradshaw and Taino Hyman also add energy and a skillset to the team.
Lakeland is currently 0-3, but Wood has seen some good things from her team so far. She sees that the team is hungry for a win, and soon the Cavs believe that first win is coming soon.
