Get healthy alongside your child

It’s not easy keeping up with a workout regimen as a parent or guardian, which is why the Suffolk Public Library is offering opportunities for parents to exercise with their boys and girls and bond with other families looking for the same healthy lifestyle.

The “Moms on the Move” series of free, public group workout sessions will kick off on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the North Suffolk Library, 2000 Bennetts Creek Park Road. Participants will meet in the lobby inside the building before the library officially opens at 10 a.m.

Programs on healthy and safe fitness will be led by Library Services Coordinator Shawna LoMonaco, and participants will also receive information from local experts on a variety of topics, from healthy eating habits at home to easy-to-do exercises that don’t require gym memberships.

LoMonaco said that activities will include walks around the Bennett’s Creek neighborhoods, with caretakers wearing baby carriers if need be so that their little ones can tag along. There will also be sessions based on YouTube videos that demonstrate baby carrier exercises.

“I just want to empower them,” LoMonaco said. “They don’t have to spend a bunch of money at the gym or even leave their children to get that healthy time for themselves.”

The sessions also coincide with the library’s preschool programs that begin on Fridays at about 10:30 a.m., right around the time each session will end.

Parents and guardians will learn to stay healthy while setting a good example for their children to follow right beside them, LoMonaco said.

“If they’re raised seeing a healthy lifestyle, then that will be natural to them and become their lifestyle too,” she said.

All parents and guardians are welcome to participate, but a medical release form is required for any mother less than 12 weeks postpartum. Call 514-7323 or visit suffolkpubliclibrary.com for more information.
