Lots to do this Saturday

It’s once again autumn in Suffolk, our favorite season because we get to celebrate so many things that make Suffolk great.

Fall temperatures are starting to arrive, the leaves will begin changing before we know it, and our Saturdays will be filled with fall festivals and fun events of all kinds.

This Saturday is the first to have multiple irresistible events, and we’re sure you can find a reason to get out of the house, even if it’s not quite cold enough for a sweater yet.

The Healthy Suffolk 5K and 1-Mile Fun Walk at Constant’s Wharf and Marina, 110 E. Constance Road, will take place this Saturday morning. The family- and dog-friendly race welcomes registrations that morning beginning at 7 a.m., and the price is $30 at the gate. Participants will get to see the beautiful marina, downtown neighborhoods and the historic Cedar Hill Cemetery during their run or walk.

At 10 a.m., the Peanut Fest parade will step off in downtown Suffolk. Grab a spot along West Washington Street or North Main Street, and get there early for the best view.

From 2 to 4 p.m., you can check out the Underground Art Show at North Suffolk Library, 2000 Bennetts Creek Park Road. Works by local artists inspired by banned books will be displayed, and art-making stations will be available.

That evening, the ninth annual BBQ and Oyster Roast for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia Suffolk Unit will take place from 5 to 8 p.m., also at the marina. In addition to the spectacular views, food, beverages and entertainment, visitors will have the satisfaction of knowing they’ve supported an organization that is making significant contributions to our community. The hundreds of members of the Boys and Girls Club in Suffolk get engaging and enriching programming focused on academic success, good character, citizenship and healthy lifestyles while they are at the club during the after-school hours and during the summer.

Tickets for the oyster roast are $30 per person.

We hope to see you there.
