The Nansemond River High School boys’ volleyball team defeated rival Lakeland High School in straight sets on Monday.

It is the first of two meetings between the two teams this season. The Warriors sit at 1-1 against their cross-town rivals.

“Overall, we played pretty solid,” Coach Teresa Hodges said. “Our passing was on point, and the boys were communicating well. They all just came together and did a good job.”

Amahri McClain had five aces, six kills and a block. Benji Weirchert had three aces. Both Noah Maddrey and Christian Lartey added four aces each. It was the second win for Nansemond River this season.

“We’ll take any win under our belt, and we hope this win can start some momentum for us,” Hodges said. “With only a few games left, we want to make sure we finish the season strong.”

There are some tough teams throughout the Southeastern District. Nansemond River has been making some of these top teams sweat in games, which they feel is indicative of the progress they have been making this season.

“At the end of the day, we just want to finish strong as a team,” Hodges said. “We want to be much better than what we started. I think the boys are still striving to be that.”

Lakeland has yet to win a game this season and will continue to work hard to do so. They will get another chance to get the best of the Warriors.

Nansemond River will face Indian River High School at home at 7 p.m. Thursday. Lakeland will face Great Bridge High School at home at 7 p.m. Thursday.
