NSA came in at No. 1 again in the Tuesday evening Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association poll.

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football team is sporting its third week in the top spot of the Division II poll. Last week during their bye week, they were No. 1, and this week remain there while getting ready for Norfolk Academy.

Coach Mike Biehl and his team aren’t looking too far ahead.

“The rankings don’t mean a whole lot in week seven,” Biehl said. “It’s sort of like college football. Where you are right now might not be where you finish. It’s certainly nice, but it doesn’t mean much until the end. All we are focusing on right now is the opportunity in front of us, and that’s Norfolk Academy.”

Biehl knows his players are well aware of what they’ve accomplished to this point this season, but he emphasizes focusing on the task at hand. Not looking too far ahead has worked for them up to this point. Biehl knows he is dealing with 14- to 18-year-olds who get excited when they see rankings, but he’s also confident in the team’s focus going forward.

“We just want to continue to focus on what we can control,” Biehl said. “We can’t control what the rankings will look like in three weeks. But we can control being the best team we want to be. Making sure we are getting our lifts in, practicing hard, taking care of our bodies will help us continue to be where we want to be.”

The NSA and NA matchup has been an exciting one over the years, and NSA wants to make sure they don’t have any rust coming off of a bye week.
