School bus hits bear

A Suffolk Public Schools bus hit a black bear Monday morning in the 1200 block of Hosier Road.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink said the incident happened at 9:03 a.m. The bus had six students on board. There was no damage to the bus, and the bear got up and ran away.

Suffolk Public Schools division spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw said the bus was on its way to Booker T. Washington Elementary School and that there were no injuries to students.

Hosier Road is mostly forested land and is near the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which hosts a high concentration of black bear, according to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
