To the editor:

With the upcoming midterm elections, it would be prudent for people to be informed on who the candidates are and what they stand for. Many people probably forget that it’s not just their representatives at the federal level that are running for office, but at the state and local levels as well. These are the people that have a more direct effect on their life and their family’s lives. When focusing on the local level, the people should think about who they want on their local School Board, since they have a hand in determining the quality of education that future generations receive. I’d like to briefly talk about one of those candidates.

I was blessed with the opportunity to have Sherri Story as one of my teachers throughout my four years of high school. She was not only my teacher during my four years of high school; she also became a mentor for me and a friend. During her classes, she pushed students to think critically and ask the tough questions. Her lessons not only provided the tools that her students would need to pass their exams, but also the tools they’d need to succeed in life. Her unique way of teaching created an environment that was fun and fostered creativity that promoted a student’s desire to learn and pay attention to what she had to say. As a mentor, she provided counsel and helped me to make the best academic, professional and life decisions that I could. As a friend, she was always supportive of my aspirations and was willing to listen if I had personal problems. The passion she has for the improvement of the students, educators and education system overall is why I wholly support Sherri Story for School Board.

Like I said before, it is important for the people to be informed on who they are voting for and not to just vote on name recognition alone. I urge everyone to take the time to educate yourselves on the candidates so that not only are your interests represented, but the interests of your children. I strongly believe that Sherri Story can make an impactful change that can lead to a brighter future for Suffolk Public Schools.
