Lakeland High School football went to 2-7 after a road loss to Hickory High School Thursday night.
It was a tough loss for a Lakeland team trying to make a late push for the playoffs. The Cavs competed all the way until the end but fell 28-20.
In the first quarter, Hickory got things started, scoring on a quarterback sneak. They went into the second quarter with a 7-0 lead. Lakeland got on the board in the second quarter with Erick Grant rushing in off a three-yard touchdown. Bryce St. Louis set it up with an interception. However, unfortunately for Lakeland, Hickory scored two more times pushing its lead to 15 at the end of the half.
The Cavs stormed down the field in the middle of the third to cut the lead to 21-12 after Erick Grant scored his second touchdown of the night. A big fourth quarter for Lakeland had them within one point 21-20 with 2:30 left to play. But Hickory had the last laugh, scoring on a 75-yard drive and pushing their lead to 28-20 to end the game.
Lakeland was unable to put a win streak together during the regular season. Their finale will be against Great Bridge High School at home at 7 p.m. Friday.
