Suffolk Police on Friday morning identified the person who died in Thursday night’s fatal train wreck.
Karl Alexander Hill, 61, of Norfolk, died in the accident. He was the driver of the dump truck that was struck by an Amtrak train, according to a city press release.
The crash was reported at 7:54 p.m. between the crossings at Hall Avenue and Moore Avenue off East Washington Street. Police, firefighters and other emergency crews were on the scene well into the night investigating and cleaning up the crash.
Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods wrote in an email that Amtrak train 125 was heading to Norfolk from New York at the time of the incident. One customer reported an injury and was taken to a hospital, she said.
The train did not derail.
On Friday, crews were busy on the scene making repairs to the gates. Rocks from the railbed were strewn on the parking lot of Chilton’s Auto Repair adjacent to the tracks, and vehicles in the business’s lot had been damaged.
