The Lady Saints field hockey grabbed a 1-0 win Tuesday in the first round of the conference tournament.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy opened the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools tournament against Steward School. NSA got a 1-0 win. It was the second matchup between the two teams, as Steward took the win in the first meeting.

Karley Wetmore scored the goal with an assist from Lauren Meyers. Before the game, NSA had needed to make up a little bit of ground in the state rankings for the playoffs. Coming into the game, Coach Shelby Bourn felt good about the Lady Saints’ chances. In the previous couple of weeks, it had been tough sledding. They were eighth in the rankings and getting a win over Steward, which was sixth, will be good for them going forward.

NSA will now play Norfolk Academy on the road at 3 p.m. Wednesday. At the beginning of the month, NSA took a 10-0 loss to Norfolk Academy. The Lady Saints don’t have anything to lose but to go out and play hard.

“We want to leave everything out on the field,” Bourn said. “At this point, you don’t know how many games you have left. We want to make sure the seniors finish strong. Against any team we play, we want to make them earn their goals. On our end, we just want to play as strong as we can.”
