Ministry to host food, supply drive

For the next three weekends, Having Church Ministries is going to be hosting a food and supply drive to benefit victims of Hurricane Florence.

On Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Nov. 16, Lue Ward, of Having Church Ministries, will be set up at Mike Duman Auto Sales, 2300 Godwin Blvd., and on Nov. 10 he will be set up at LW’s Center, 701 Old E. Pinner St., ready to collect items before he leaves for North Carolina on Nov. 17.

“I’ve done this before. I went to Katrina twice in 2003, and I did a food drive for them,” said Ward, who is also on City Council. “I started kind of late this year, but I think it will be fine and it will all work out.”

Ward plans to visit two churches in New Bern, N.C., and Wilmington, N.C.

After seeing the damage done from the hurricane, Ward was inspired to do what he could to help those in need.

“When the call comes, you listen, and the Lord inspired me again. I thought that we should still try and pull this off in a month’s time,” Ward said. “It is so close to Thanksgiving, and we can’t enjoy ourselves if we don’t help out.”

Having been to multiple cities that have been destroyed by hurricanes, Ward has a different perspective than others. After seeing the tragedy up close, he believes it is impossible to just see it on the news and not want to help.

“I’ve been to this type of disaster before. They have nothing. When you see it, it’s a different outlook than seeing it on the TV. It’ll change your whole perspective going down there and seeing those things,” Ward said. “I loved being able to help.”

Ward is ready to get started this Saturday at Mike Duman Auto Sales from noon to 5 p.m., and it will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 16. The LW’s Center will have the event on Nov. 10 run from noon to 4 p.m.

Ward plans to leave early Nov. 17 to travel down to North Carolina to donate the food.

They will be accepting canned, boxed or packaged food and a slew of other supplies.
