One person died in a two-vehicle crash on Monday evening.

Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded to the crash in the 2000 block of Whaleyville Boulevard after it was reported at 8:54 p.m., according to a city press release.

The head-on collision involved a van and a pickup truck, the press release stated. The driver of the van, its only occupant, was declared deceased at the scene. The four occupants of the pickup truck were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the press release stated.

The roadway was shut down in the area until about 4:30 a.m. Traffic was diverted to Carolina Road from Whaleyville Boulevard.

The crash remains under investigation.
