A Lakeland High School senior brought dozens of local senior citizens a little holiday cheer when she organized a project at school to make cards for local nursing home residents.

Allison Thompson is in the Chick-fil-A Leader Academy group at the school. She said a group project she and some other students were supposed to do fell through, so she came up with another idea.

She hit upon the idea of making cards for local residents of nursing homes and retirement centers.

“I know that lots of times, the people in the nursing home or the retirement center will be left out for Christmas,” Thompson said. “I figured I could give them a little bit of Lakeland love.”

Thompson pulled other students from around the school into her project, pulling other classes into the project. Soon, she had 90 cards to hand out at local nursing homes.

She visited the Concordia Transitional Care and Rehabilitation—Nansemond Pointe on West Constance Road and handed them out to retirement center residents and rehab patients. She had about 15 left over and went to another business and handed out the rest.

“It was really great passing them out and seeing the smiles on their faces,” Thompson said.
