Man is region’s most wanted

A Norfolk man who is wanted for a shooting in Suffolk allegedly eluded police in Norfolk on Monday and earned himself the title of Hampton Roads Most Wanted from the U.S. Marshals.

Yasir Malik Smith, 20, is wanted on the shooting charges from Suffolk as well as a variety of narcotics and firearms-related offenses, according to a press release from the U.S. Marshals.

Smith is wanted in Suffolk on allegations that he shot at a couple in their car as they returned to their home on Bennetts Meadow Lane in the early morning hours of Dec. 8.

Smith is also wanted in Norfolk and Chesapeake on narcotics charges, the release stated.

On Monday, Smith eluded police during a pursuit in Norfolk, according to the U.S. Marshals. He was identified as the driver of a black Mercedes near the intersection of East Princess Anne Road and Ballentine Boulevard in Norfolk.

“Smith was able to elude police during an arrest attempt and an ensuing vehicle pursuit,” the press release stated. “Smith’s girlfriend was observed as a passenger in the vehicle, which has not been located.”

The Mercedes had Virginia license plate UZT-8346.

Smith is allegedly a known Bloods gang member and should be considered armed and dangerous. He is described as a light-skinned black male, 6 feet tall and 150 pounds, with a notable tattoo of a “W” on his neck.

“He is known to drive stolen vehicles and switch license plates,” the release stated.
