Parents, caregivers and others with a desire to help have a new opportunity to do so while also enjoying a fun night for themselves in the process.

An “Adult Prom” fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will be held next month by “Never Losing Hope Team on the Move for a Cure.” Proceeds from the prom will go towards Relay for Life of Isle of Wight Surry.

The band “Strictly Bizzness” will perform, and there will also be vendors and a professional photographer. The prom king and queen will also be crowned that evening.

Registered nurses, sisters and co-organizers Sandricka Epps and Sirena Sears are holding the event to give people the opportunity to dress up and have fun. Some adults never got their chance to enjoy prom, and others rarely have the chance nowadays to take care of themselves.

“It’s one night to stop, pause and enjoy yourself while still supporting a good cause,” Epps said in a phone interview.

The sisters were inspired to form “Team on the Move” after their mother Sandra Blount’s harrowing experience. Blount was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, when one of her daughters was finishing nursing school and the other was just starting.

Blount has since been enjoying her years as a cancer survivor with her daughters under the mantra of “you only live once.” The sisters started holding bus trips to Maryland in 2013 to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and they continue to set aside time for an annual trip in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We just go out and do different things, just to be able to enjoy life while you can,” Epps said. “We always work, work and work, but sometimes you just have to stop and pause.”

The prom will be held Feb. 9 at the Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel, 3501 Atlantic Ave. The fundraiser will be from 6 to 11 p.m. Qualified baby-sitting services will be provided for parents as well.

The cost for the prom is $75 for individuals and includes a buffet dinner, valet parking and reserved seating. Couples pay $320 for a hotel room for Saturday night and Sunday morning breakfast, or $460 to also have the room for Friday night and Saturday morning — plus Saturday morning breakfast — and one photo and two drink tickets.
