The Nansemond River High School track and field team traveled to New York last weekend to compete in the Bullis Champion Speed Invitational.
Team WAR is continuing to prepare for championship season by competing well in high-level meets. Nansemond River encountered a ton of talent from the East Coast and across the country at the meet. As usual, the Warriors showed how talented of a team they are while also monitoring where they want to be when things really get rolling over the next two weeks.
On the boys’ side, senior Kevin Johnson ran a personal best time of 49.70 in the 400-meter dash. That time placed him third in the event. Coach Marco McKoy talked recently about how impressed he has been with the speed Johnson has been showing the last couple of meets.
For the girls, Clemson signee Kori Carter ran personal best times in the 55- and 60-meter hurdles. In the 55 she ran a 7.75 time, and in the 60 she ran a time of 8.35. Her time of 8.35 was good for the fastest time in the United States currently. It is also one of the fastest times in Virginia all-time as well. Brene’ Donaldson took first in her heat with a time of 24.38 in the 200-meter dash. Tre’Breh Scott-McKoy and Lauryn Freeman both ran hard in the 400-meter dash, placing second and seventh respectively. Julia Burkley and Jayla Spady showed some good things as well.
The Class 5 Region A meet is next week, and the Warriors feel like they are more than ready for what will eventually lead to indoor state and national meets. With McKoy at the helm this year, things will look different at the top, but the process remains unchanged.
McKoy has been on board for a number of seasons, so even without Coach Justin Byron, he is confident in what he and the other assistants have put in place. Nansemond River has some very experienced seniors who have experienced state championship and national championship success, and they will show it over the month of February.
