Governor has matured and can still serve

To the editor:
The ongoing story of Gov. Ralph Northam’s Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook page is disturbing in many ways.

The opening of old wounds of a bygone era are certainly disturbing to all citizens of our Commonwealth and beyond. Equally disturbing are the calls, by some, for resignation of a good governor and good man, who has served all of us well.

Without exception, we all committed youthful missteps that, as seniors, we regret and wish we could undo. But none of us can “unring the bell.” We can only recognize our mistakes, learn from them, and accept the heartfelt apology of a fine public servant who committed a youthful indiscretion some 35 years ago — a single mistake that is totally out of character with the man who is now our governor.

There is no doubt in my mind that Governor Northam has long ago matured beyond his youthful mistakes and will continue to serve all Virginians as our governor and beyond.
