A multi-vehicle accident on Bennetts Pasture Road Wednesday afternoon led to downed utility poles and a transformer fire that sparked a brush fire.

The crash in the 5200 block of Bennetts Pasture Road was reported at 12:03 p.m., according to a city press release. Two vehicles left the roadway, with one landing in a ditch and another overturning and striking a utility pole, which then snapped and caused a transformer fire.

The man driving the overturned vehicle got out before firefighters arrived and declined medical treatment. The woman driving the other vehicle was taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Rescue personnel had to wait for crews from Dominion Energy to arrive on scene due to live electrical wires in the area, according to the release. Firefighters also extinguished a small brush fire due to the transformer fire.

As of 2:15 p.m., an online outage map from Dominion showed three customers were out of power in the area.

Bennetts Pasture Road between Sleepy Hole Road and Lee Farm Lane was anticipated to remain closed for at least four hours as crews from Dominion work to replace the damaged power pole and transformer.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
