Men will shine in pageant fundraiser
The Nansemond River Pilot Club will showcase men in makeup, wigs, dresses and heels in its 19th annual Womanless Beauty Pageant this March for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
The pageant will be held at 5:30 p.m. March 2 at Liberty Baptist Church, 116 Romans Road. Tickets are $20 each and are available during business hours Monday through Friday at Suffolk Insurance, located at 202 Market St. and 3575 Bridge Road.
Men will dress for categories such as “evening” or “casual” wear, along with competing for “best personality” and other fun distinctions. These men will be in fabulous ladies’ garments, even when some refuse to shave their beards for the show, according to Becky Adams, president of the Nansemond River Pilot Club and co-chair for the event.
The talent competition will have men dressed to impress as tennis players, cloggers or singers and other fun talents. Adams also recalled karate moves and “Dirty Dancing” when she looked back on previous pageants.
“Their whole demeanor changes, and they just take it and run with it,” she said about the men of the evening.
Winners will be chosen for each of the different categories, then the “Ms. Relay for Life” will be given a sash, crown and high-heel shoe trophy.
Dinner will be provided by Carrabba’s at 6 p.m. — with chicken marsala, penne pasta, salad and dessert — followed by the show at 7 p.m. Meals are included in the ticket price. Live entertainment will be provided by Colton James.
The net proceeds from the event will benefit the American Cancer Society and other cancer support organizations locally. Adams said they’ve raised more than $100,000 for the American Cancer Society over the past 18 years.
“It’s great food, great fellowship (and) great entertainment,” she said, “all for wonderful cause to fight the dreaded disease of cancer.”
The deadline to buy tickets will be the end of business on March 1. Tickets will not be available at the door.
