Team WAR will head to New York to compete in the New Balance Indoor National Championships this weekend.
The Nansemond River High School track and field team will be going into its final meet of the indoor season for the annual nationals meet. In years past, Team WAR has performed extremely well there, and the team looks to continue to do that.
Nansemond River is a couple of weeks removed from its fifth straight indoor state title. It wasn’t pretty by any means; however, the indoor nationals give Team WAR a chance to improve on a state championship performance they didn’t believe was their best output. Team WAR has won its first title under the direction of Coach Marco McKoy and will look to add on that hardware at nationals as well.
“This is a special group we have here,” McKoy said. “They are mentally tough, and even though we didn’t perform as well as we wanted to at states, I have no doubt in my mind these girls can bounce back.”
Last year at the indoor nationals meet, Nansemond River came home with two national titles and a runner-up. Kori Carter and Tre’Breh Scott-McKoy were part of a relay team that took home first place. Carter, Scott-McKoy and Brene’ Donaldson were part of a 4×200 team that finished runner-up at nationals last year.
Carter will be in one of the most anticipated races of the meet, the 60-meter hurdles. Overall, Nansemond River has shown a trend of performing its best in championship races. As strong as the senior class is this year, it’s possible Team WAR could again return to Suffolk with a national title or two.
