Cavs hope fresh start leads to wins

The Lakeland High School baseball team hopes to put last season behind them as they hit the field for a new season.
Last season wasn’t quite what the Cavs baseball team expected. After going winless in 2018, the Cavs are looking forward to a fresh start. Coach David Devers returns at the helm and will have a ton of youth at his disposal.
“We have a talented group, but they are young,” Devers said. “We have a ton of sophomores and some solid talent in between.”
Playing in the Southeastern District was tough for the Cavs last year. Their record didn’t reflect how most of their games went. They were competitive in a lot of their games but couldn’t get over the hump. Demonta Hawkins and Tyler Spencer are expected to be standouts and leaders for the Cavs this season. Noah Boone and Aaron Wright are also expected to contribute.
“We have a group that’s going to be together for a couple of years, so we want to see guys be able to put it all together this season,” Devers said. “We want to trust one another and be competitive this season and possibly get a couple of wins under our belt.”
It’s been a rough start as far as preparation goes for teams in the area due to weather. However, Devers hopes it won’t have an effect on the Cavs wanting to start the season off strong Tuesday. They play Hickory High School at home at 5:30 p.m.
