The Nansemond River High School baseball team is young but hopes for a competitive season this year.

The Warriors come into the 2019 season ready to get off to a strong start. Nansemond River has added some talent and returns some productive players from last season. Coach Mark Stuffel sees the team being young this season but feels the team can be competitive.

“We have a young team as far as age, but we have a really good group,” Stuffel said. “We have some good pitching and defense. If we score some runs, I think we’ll be all right.”

On the mound, the Warriors will have some strong seniors throwing over the plate. Caleb Pittman transferred in and will pitch for the Warriors, and Daulton Manning returns. The Warriors also return Cameron Pittman and Bryson Dansberry. Otherwise, the Warriors are fairly young.

“We have a competitive group, and that’s the goal, to always be competitive,” Stuffel said. “We play in a good district, so we want to go out there and be our best and be competitive.”

Nansemond River will start the season off against Deep Creek High School Tuesday evening. As with most teams in the area, they have been battling limited practices because of the weather. However, Stuffel believes the Warriors will come out ready to go.

“We want to compete all around and limit mistakes,” he said. “We want to take advantage of every opportunity, and I think we’ll be fine.”
