The Lakeland High School baseball team got its first win of the season Thursday evening on the road.

The Cavs picked up a 2-1 win over Deep Creek High. It was a low-scoring affair, but it was a much-needed victory for a Lakeland team that didn’t have much success last season.

“I think it was good for the kids,” Coach David Devers said. “We have such a young team, so it was good to see them fight through a low-scoring game.”

Lakeland was shut out in its first game of the season against Hickory High School. It was good for the players to put that loss behind them quickly to grab a win over Deep Creek.

“It was really good for the guys to come back locked in after the start we had,” Devers said. “They were all excited and felt great about it. It’s good to get a win early, because the guys see they can play a decent caliber of baseball.”

Tyler Spencer got the win on the mound, striking out four. Noah Boone went 1-3 and had a two-run double that put the Cavs ahead in the sixth inning.

Lakeland will host Menchville High School at 5 p.m. Monday.
