Ralph Bernard Colander Sr.

Ralph Bernard Colander Sr., 74, entered into eternal rest and peace surrounded by his family on March 24, 2019, at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk. He was born Dec. 24, 1944, in Nansemond County. He attended East Suffolk Public School. He retired in 2006 from Northrop Grumman Newport News with 42 years of service as a welder specialist. He was the son of the late Bishop Obadiah and Dejohnnie (Ricks) Colander and stepson of Bernadine Colander.
He leaves to honor and cherish his memories his loving wife, Elizabeth Bivins Colander. They enjoyed a union in love and devotion for 55 years that was an example to all that knew them. He is also survived by two sons, Ralph Jr. (Karen), Obadiah II (Renee); two daughters, Amy (Phillip) Lunsford, Ona (Michael) Nickelson; two goddaughters, Kris Ross, Charnita Boggs; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Alethia C. Stokes and Harlena; and one brother, Rudolph (Linda). He also leaves four brothers, Alfred Sr. (Jeanette), John (Hortense), Dwayne (Yolanda) Miller, Joseph (Mary); two sisters, Barbara (Willie) Green, Rita (Alfred Lee) Turner; aunt, Harlena McGee; a host of nephews, nieces, in-laws, cousins and friends; and a mentee, Bennie Ricks.
A celebration of his life will begin at noon on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at Faith Temple Ministries, 476 Wellons St., Suffolk, VA 23434.
Family visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. on March 28, 2019 at Faith Temple Ministries in the Dejohnnie Fellowship Hall.
