The Lakeland High School softball team is excited about the second half of the season coming up after spring break.
At the break, the Lady Cavs are 5-4 on the season. Before the break, Lakeland competed against some tough teams, including Hickory High School. Coach Steve Wood feels good about the Lady Cavs and where they are at the moment. They have played very good teams and have even won some of those.
“I am feeling optimistic,” he said. “I think with how young we are, we have played well. I knew a few of our games were going to be close, and we found a way to pull them out.”
Lakeland has a couple of wins under their belt against fellow Class 3 Region A schools. Those are huge for a Lakeland team that is the only 3A team in a talented Southeastern District. Wood believes those games have been a good measuring stick for the Lady Cavs.
“Some of those teams are pretty good,” Wood said. “We have the same characteristics, but it’s good to be able to play against similar competition.”
Through the first half of the season, the Lady Cavs have gotten solid play out of pitcher Hayleigh Presson. She’s a freshman and has progressed nicely throughout the season. She has also been solid at the plate. Catcher Brooke Howe has also been able to hit really well for the Lady Cavs, along with Lisa Stuprich.
Right after the break, Lakeland will see some very good teams in the district. Wood is excited to see how the team competes.
“We are going to run into some teams that are playing really well,” Wood said. “It’s going to be exciting to see how we come out and compete against them.”
