NRHS performs 2019’s Shakespeare
Nansemond River High School theater students will present a modern rendition of William Shakespeare’s classic “Romeo and Juliet” this week for their annual spring show. The performances will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the school, 3301 Nansemond Parkway.
Junior Noah Fisher and sophomore Jackie Rangel will play the lead roles. Directed by Suffolk Public Schools’ Fine Arts Facilitator Dr. Joleen Neighbours, Noah, Jackie and the rest of the cast and crew will bring Shakespeare’s tragedy crashing into modern life “through a chorus of social media,” according to the press release.
The star-crossed lovers and their families will navigate the year 2019 using Shakespeare’s original words from 1597.
“Student directors and seniors Colin Lowrey, Alie Linens, Joey White and Amaya Wills bring the 2019 flare and context to the classic language,” Neighbours stated in the press release. “With a cast and crew of (more than) 40 students, theater at Nansemond River High School brings together students from all areas.”
Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and Suffolk Public Schools staff. For more information about NRHS and SPS arts, call the school at 923-4101 or visit the school’s website at nrhs.spsk12.net.
