A stretch of Pruden Boulevard that had been closed for more than three months due to drainage work reopened Friday.

The 2500 block of Pruden Boulevard between Lake Meade and Sadler Pond closed on Feb. 11 as Tidewater Utility Construction Corporation performed work to improve the drainage in that stretch of road.

The company installed a double, 10-foot by 4-foot concrete box culvert about 10 to 12 feet below the bottom of the bedding stone of the highway. The culverts will connect Lake Meade and Sadler Pond.

The work forced traffic normally using that stretch of road to detour onto the Route 460 bypass. While no businesses were inaccessible due to the construction, employees or customers of those businesses needed to use the bypass to get to them.

Initially, the city had planned to partially open that section of Pruden Boulevard in early May, but the contractor requested an additional 20 days of full closure to the schedule to guarantee that the project be finished and reopened by May 31, according to a city news release.

They came in about a week ahead of that schedule.

The extension was needed due to unforeseen utility issues that came up during the work, as well as the wet weather the city has experienced, the release stated.
