A Suffolk man was killed during a shootout between two groups of people at a Chesapeake party late Saturday.
Brandon Smith, 27, was the fatal victim among the 10 who were shot, according to a press release from Chesapeake Police.
Chesapeake Police responded to the Holly Cove neighborhood at the intersection of Holly Cove Drive and Airline Boulevard for a report of a large party with traffic congestion and people refusing to move for vehicle, Officer Leo Kosinski with Chesapeake Police stated in a press release.
While they were en route, shots were reported fired. Officers arrived to find multiple people shot.
Kosinski later confirmed that a total of 10 victims were shot.
“Detectives were able to find through the investigation that two groups of individuals came to this gathering and got into some kind of altercation,” Kosinski stated. “The altercation ended up erupting into gun fire with both groups shooting at each other. This is how several of the innocent victims were struck with bullets last night.”
Kosinski said no arrests have been made and there are currently no suspect descriptions, other than the shooters were “likely males.”
Kosinski also stated in the press release that it is not currently being investigated as a “mass shooting event,” which he described as “one or more suspects targeting innocent bystanders with the intent of causing death or injury.”
