Appreciating fathers

We’ve all done it. Stopped at the store for a last-minute Father’s Day gift, giving dad everything from cheap cologne and wacky ties to golf balls and the singing wall trout. We’ve even gone so far as to mail it in completely and purchase the dreaded “World’s Greatest Dad” T-shirt.
It’s never been that big of a deal to get him something worthwhile, because it’s a day that never meant too much to the man himself. However, it’s our humble fathers who probably deserve to be honored the most.
Dad is the man who made sure we were fastened into our car seat just right so that we could get home from the hospital safely. He was there when we took our first steps and watched us as we got onto the school bus for the first time. He taught us how to throw a baseball. He helped get back up after we fell off our bikes. He’s the man we idolized.
He’s also the man that we told ourselves as teenagers that we didn’t want to be like, but now all we want to do is live up to the example he has set. We ignored his advice only to learn the hard way that he knew exactly what he was talking about.
In loving our mothers, he showed us that true love and respect can be given. He’s the man who walked us down the aisle on our wedding day. He’s the man that we hope is proud of the person we’ve become.
There are so many things that our fathers have done for us — whether we’re aware of it or not — that it’s almost impossible to list them all.
This Father’s Day, instead of giving your dad a gift that he will simply toss in the back of his closet, thank him for helping you become the person you are today. After all, he’s not just a dad, he’s also a superhero.
