Innovative events for the win

Suffolk is known for putting on some innovative events, and the Amazing Peanut Chase is no different — and, in fact, keeps getting better.

The citywide scavenger hunt of sorts pits teams against each other and gives them a packet with clues to different locations in the city — some well-known, some not so well-known. They compete to visit as many locations as possible, collect cards to enter for prize drawings and more.

The event, which is put on by the Suffolk Public Library, is one of those cool events that happens in the city that’s geared toward residents. When you put together all of the city departments — especially the libraries, Parks and Recreation as well as Tourism — not to mention nonprofit events and constant business goings-on, it’s hard to believe some people still complain that there’s nothing to do.

This was the fourth annual occurrence of this event, and it added a new element that makes perfect sense — asking the participants to pick up litter along the way.

With the litter problem we have in Suffolk, this was a great idea to ask new volunteers to participate in the cleanliness of their city while they enjoyed this free event. Lots of them participated, with 15 teams taking litter pick-up kits and bringing back bags of garbage at the end of the day. Those who returned at least one bag of trash got an entry into a separate raffle.

This event is also a great way to get local businesses and nonprofits involved as sites to visit, and help folks who live here perhaps get to know more of their city.

We extend a hearty kudos to the library and their partners for this great annual event, and we hope to see it continue.
